We do require, however, that the student prepares at least two songs. The songs should reflect the genre of music in which the student is interested in studying. These can be as complex as an opera aria or as simple as “Amazing Grace.” Recommendations by genre are listed below:
Classical – Two contrasting arias or art songs that best show your vocal diversity and technique (i.e., pitch range, registration, dynamic flexibility, articulation, etc.)
Musical Theater – Two contrasting songs (e.g., upbeat and ballad) or two contrasting musical theater eras (e.g., legit and contemporary).
Commercial – Two contemporary songs in contrasting genres (e.g., R&B and Pop) or one contemporary and one standard (e.g., “If I Ain’t Got You” and “If I Fall in Love”)
Jazz – Two contrasting standards common to the genre.
Please provide SHEET MUSIC for your selections. A cappella (unaccompanied) singing is not permitted in vocal assessments! Lyric sheets are permitted, but please have your selections as close to memorized as possible. If you are unsure where to find the sheet music for your selections, please click on the REPERTORE menu item below. If you are a beginning vocalist and unsure of which songs to sing, please click below for suggested beginner repertoire.
Please understand that these songs are for “vocal sample” purposes only! This is not an “audition” in that determination of your acceptance to the program will not be based on your “performance” of these songs! We simply need to measure elements of your vocal technique both during singing and speaking.
